ASHFORD – Pike Liberal Arts spoiled Ashford Academy’s homecoming by defeating the Falcons 27-0 at Layton Field Friday night.
The Patriots once again used a strong ground attack led by Nick McLauglin to overpower Ashford.
The senior running back accumulated 263 yards rushing on 21 carries for the night with a touchdown. McLaughlin would also throw for a score in the fourth quarter.
Things remained quiet in the first quarter as the teams felt each other out offensively sharing punts.
The Patriots struck first at the 11:29 mark in the second period on a 17-yard score by Taytom Barnes.
Later in the frame, McLaughlin would break free for a 71-yard dash to the Falcon 12-yard line. One play later, the Patriots star was in the endzone giving Pike a 14-0 advantage.
Ashford’s defense kept the Patriots honest until with 1:29 left in the third quarter Josh Starling found pay dirt on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.
Late in the final quarter, McLaughlin tossed a 7-yard scoring pass to Barnes to cap the scoring.
The Patriots rushed for 305 yards on the night while holding their opponents to just 170 yards of total offense.
McLaughlin not only led his team in rushing but also in tackles with 13. Alex Pierce finished with eight and Barnes with seven.
Pike will return home to face Hooper Academy next week.
