Nicole Holland singled in Laken Maulden in the seventh inning to give the Pike County Lady Bullldogs at 5-4 win over Abbeville on Wednesday.
The win puts the Bulldogs in the No. 2 seed for the area tournament with a 2-2 record.
“It’s always nice to comeback in the last inning and win,” said Bulldogs head coach Fawn Sims. “It’s a win.”
Brooke Bennett took the mound for the Bulldogs and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. She finished with seven innings pitched three runs on seven hits and 12 strikeouts.
“Brooke has gradually gotten better,” Sims said. “The more she has the thrown the better she is getting. She did a good job. She didn’t miss many spots so I am pleased with how she did.”
The Bulldogs took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Bennett singled in Beyonce Revels.
The Bulldogs finished with six hits, but it was their ability to take advantage of the Yellow Jackets mistakes that was the difference in the game.
“Being aggressive offensively on the bases is very important,” Sims said. “We are trying to execute and look for 60 more feet. That is what we are striving to do.”
The Bulldogs added two more in the bottom of the third when a throwing error on a Revels’ bunt allowed both Precious Vaznaian and Revels to score.
The Yellow Jackets scored two runs on two singles that sneaked through the middle of the infield in the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Senkethia Thompson got a one-out single that was followed by a walk by Nicole Holland, a Aubrey Maulden single and another walk by Akiyah Peters. Thompson came around to score on a wild pitch and the Bulldogs carried a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning.
The Yellow Jackets scored two runs when a single up the middle got past the Bulldogs and went all the way to the wall.
The Bulldogs came right back in the bottom of the seventh when Maulden, Bennett and Thompson all reached base via the walk, leading to Holland so single in Maulden for the game winning run.
The Bulldogs had hits from Maulden, Bennett, Vaznaian, Thompson, Aubrey Maulden and Holland. Bennett, Thompson and Holland all finished with a run batted in.
The Bulldogs will be back in action at 5 p.m. today Thursday when they host Ariton.
