Pre-Minors still 'ready to play'

Published Saturday, July 18, 2009

The Troy Pre-Minor tournament team is one game away from elimination, this after a first-round loss to Thomasville by a score of 16-13.

Troy struggled from the outset, committing five errors in the top of the first inning, which allowed Thomasville to take a 6-0 lead.

Troy head coach Frank Scarbrough said the first inning was the difference in the game.

“That first inning in the field was what killed us,” Scarbrough said. “We tightened up after that, but we just couldn’t pull it out. That first inning was just too tough.”

Scarbrough said he was proud of his team for shaking out of the first-inning funk.

“We definitely settled down after that first inning and played a lot better, but we just couldn’t overcome those mistakes,” Scarbrough said.

Troy fought back for two runs in the home half of the first and trailed 6-2 at the end of one.

From that point on, Troy settled into a groove and was able to play pretty much evenly with Thomasville, outscoring Thomasville 11-10 from the second inning on.

Troy plays at 11 a.m. in an elimination game against Smiths Station.

Despite the disappointment of losing and the added pressure of an elimination game, Scarbrough said the team will not suffer from a letdown.

“They’re ready to go.”
