Those who are serious about managing deer on their property or hunting lease will have two opportunities to participate in an “Advanced Deer Management I” seminar on Aug. 29.

The seminar will be conducted from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University.

The seminar also will be broadcast live to several locations, including the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland. Fifty seats will be available.

The seminar is offered by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University in cooperation with the Alabama State Chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Tammy Powell, Pike County Extension coordinator, said the seminar will feature talks from several professional deer biologists from Alabama and Mississipp and cover topics such as quality deer management, how to evaluate the condition of harvested animals, conducting forage surveys, developing harvest strategies, managing deer habitat and food plots and developing deer hunting cooperatives.

“The seminar will have a practical approach,” Powell said.

“It will focus mainly on what you can do to manage deer populations. The seminar will provide sound, science-based information.”

The seminar will also set the stage for subsequent deer seminars to be held in Alabama.

“Organizers are currently developing ‘Advanced Deer Management II,’ and the seminar will probably be held in August 2010,” Powell said.

“This seminar will focus on specific aspects of deer ecology and management such as genetics and population estimation techniques.”

The cost for the “Advanced Deer Management I” seminar at the Auburn University site is $50 for adults and $25 for children.

Cost at the video-conferencing site is $25 for adults and $10 for children.”

Coffee, donuts, refreshments and a packet of deer publications are included in the cost of the seminar. Participants will be responsible for their own lunch.

Advanced registration is required by Aug. 22.
