When the city receives several inches of rain in a matter of hours, roadways designed to handle normal amounts of water flood. The design of the road is not to be blamed, nor is the city of Troy. As soon as the heavy rainfall slackens, the water returns to its intended path through the storm drainage system.

But what can cause problems is people who choose to drive during severe storms. During times of extremely heavy rainfall, such as that experienced in Troy Tuesday, water may temporarily flood some streets. Driving through those areas can cause cars to stall, which leads to other traffic hazards. Visibility is significantly reduced, which makes driving very dangerous.

When there is an emergency, such as a lightning strike or car accident, motorists cause further hazard if they are not able to yield to police cars, fire trucks and ambulances.

We realize it is important to drivers to get where they are going on time. But when severe weather strikes, use common sense. Take cover and stay off the roads. If you must drive, proceed slowly and with caution. Saving a few minutes of time is not worth having an accident.
