EUFAULA – The Charles Henderson Trojans’ baseball team maintained their control over Class 5A Area 4 with a 4-3 win over Eufaula on Monday.
CHHS is now 15-7 overall and 2-0 in the area, with both Eufaula and Carroll-Ozark still having to come to Troy.
Senior David Taylor earned the save, but only after the Tigers had loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. With just one out, CHHS third baseman Clint Pugh came up with a big defensive stop, knocking down a ground ball to prevent the tying run from scoring.
Taylor then did the rest, striking out the next two Eufaula batters on six straight pitches to end the game.
The Trojans gave up just two hits during the entire contest against the Tigers, those coming by Lorn Moyd and Stephen Dawson.
Eufaula scored all three of their runs off of a CHHS error in the bottom of the second.
CHHS had seven hits on the night, led by Jason Barron’s perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and Jarvis Woods 2-for-3.
The Trojans scored two runs in the second and two runs in the fifth. Kevin Stephens got on base courtesy of a walk and Woods followed with a single. Pete Van Horn was hit with a pitch and Will Jones reached first on a Eufaula error. Stephens and Woods scored in the inning for CHHS.
In the top of the fifth, Barron also reached base on a walk and Justin Sims, who picked up the win on the mound for the Trojans, drove him home with an RBI single. Sims scored on error for CHHS.
Charles Henderson will play at Opp today. The game originally scheduled against Cottonwood High School, to be played at CHHS’s Frazier Field, has been cancelled.
The Trojans return to action at home on Tuesday, April 17 to face Carroll-Ozark.
