While many local high school baseball and softball teams were off due to the Easter weekend, the Charles Henderson High School Lady Trojans stayed hard at work splitting four games in three days
in Ozark and Dothan.
The Lady Trojans resumed action Tuesday night hosting Robert E. Lee at the Troy SportsPlex.
Here are the results of this weekend’s CHHS fast pitch softball action.
CHHS 13 Carroll 5
On Thursday afternoon, the Lady Trojans (13-10) started the weekend traveling to Ozark to play a regulated (untimed) game against the Carroll High School Lady Eagles.
Much like the first game in Troy on April 6, the Lady Trojans dominated as they clobbered the Lady Eagles 13-5. CHHS opened the game scoring five runs in the top of the first. The key hit of the inning was a three run RBI double by Elizabeth Rountree driving in Kelly Miller, Rachel Spurlin and Christine Haug clearing the bases.
The Lady Trojans added single runs in the second and third innings to increase the lead to 7-0. In the top of the second, Laura Wesley scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by Amanda Floyd. One inning later, Brittany Carlisle walked and scored on a run scoring single by Emily Watkins.
After Ozark trimmed the lead in the bottom of the third to 7-4, the Lady Trojans put the game away by scoring six runs in the final three innings. Watkins led the way going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Miller was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in as well for the Lady Trojans. Lanell Boswell scored a run as a courtesy runner for Carlisle in the inning. Carlisle earned the win for CHHS.
CHHS 7 Prattville 5
Early Friday afternoon, the Lady Trojans traveled to Dothan to participate in the third annual Buffalo Rock Fast Pitch Softball Tournament at
Westgate Park. The tournament featured 25 of the best fast pitch softball teams from south Alabama and northwest Florida.
In the first game of pool play, the two-time defending tournament champions got off to a good start as they scored runs in the top of the seventh outlasting Prattville 7-5.
After Prattville scored one run in the bottom of the second, the Lady Trojans came up with three runs of their own in the top of the third. With one out, Rountree singled, Carlisle and Chelsea Howard each reached on a pair of errors before
Wesley
highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double giving CHHS a 3-1 lead. Boswell scored as a courtesy runner for Carlisle in the rally.
Trailing 4-3 in the top of the sixth, the Lady Trojans battled back to reclaim the lead at 5-4 scoring two runs. After Miller singled, Rachel Spurlin drove her in on a RBI double to tie the game at 4-4.
One batter later, Rountree singled Spurlin came in from second base to cap the inning.
Prattville followed up CHHS efforts by scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game before the Lady Trojans scored two runs to take the lead for good. After Howard led off with a walk, she advanced to third when Watkins singled and the right fielder for Prattville committed an error allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Wesley brought Howard in on a RBI ground out and Watkins scored on Miller’s sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.
Prattville threatened in the bottom of the seventh putting a runner on first to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Wesley threw the runner out at second ending the threat and allowing CHHS to preserve the win.
Carlisle, who earned her second straight win to improve to 6-4, went the distance allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking none and striking out one. Despite the low strikeout total, Carlisle forced Prattville batters to hit into several ground ball outs.
Satsuma 4 CHHS 0
In the second game of pool play Friday afternoon, the Lady Trojans fell to 6A member Satsuma 4-0. Satsuma scored single runs in the first and fifth and two runs in the seventh for all of the scoring. The Lady Trojans were held to just one hit which was an infield single by Howard.
Spurlin was the hard luck loser for the Lady Trojans as she went the distance allowing four earned runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out two batters.
Port St. Joe (Fla.) 5 CHHS 3
In the first game of the single elimination tournament Saturday morning, the Lady Trojans fell victim to the 1 hour 20 minute time limit (used for midseason tournament play only) as they dropped a 5-3 decision to Port St. Joe, Fla. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth despite the Lady Trojans not getting their last at bat in the final inning.
With the game scoreless in the top of the second, the Lady Trojans scored one run when Miller walked, stole second, advanced to third on Floyd’s bunt single and scored on Rountree’s RBI hit.
After Port St. Joe scored one run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1, the Trojans took advantage of numerous errors and walks scoring two runs to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Wesley reached on an error and scored on a RBI bases loaded walk to Haug.
However, the momentum and the clock swung against the Lady Trojans as Port St. Joe scored four runs in the final two innings sending CHHS home early preventing the Lady Trojans from a three-peat in the tournament.
