Sophomores Rachel Spurlin and Laura Wesley combined on a no-hitter as the Charles Henderson High School Lady Trojans snapped a two-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Greenville High School Lady Tigers in fast pitch softball action at the Troy SportsPlex Wednesday afternoon. The game was played despite not being on the original schedule due to a March rainout.
Spurlin was dominant throughout the afternoon as she overpowered the Lady Tiger batters with her fast ball and a powerful curve ball striking out 14 batters while giving up just three walks and one unearned run. Wesley pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up one unearned run in the fourth inning, but kept Greenville hitless in her short stint.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when the Tigers scored an unearned run when Kalette Mixon scored on a passed ball. Greenville added its final run in the top of the fourth when Lakyn Newton scored on a bases loaded RBI walk to Mixon giving the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Trojans (15-12) finally snapped out of its offensive drought scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Kelly Miller and Elizabeth Rountree led off with consecutive walks, Wesley reached on an error but was thrown out at second base.
However, Miller came around to score cutting the deficit to 2-1. After Rountree tied the game on a wild pitch and Brittany Carlisle walked, Spurlin gave the Lady Trojans the big hit they were missing as she delivered a two RBI double to give CHHS a 4-2 lead. Following a wild pitch, Spurlin scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Natalie Patterson to cap the inning. It was the first runs the Lady Trojans scored in 17 innings dating back to last week.
Charles Henderson ended the scoring putting together a two run rally in the bottom of the fifth. After Emily Watkins walked, she stole second and scored on Miller’s RBI double. Miller scored on a RBI hit to center field by Wesley to cap the inning.
