ENTERPRISE – Through three scrimmage games and two battles at the sub-district tournament here, the Troy American all-stars have let their bats do the talking.
Thursday night in a showdown against the tournament’s only other unbeaten in the Elba Americans, Troy’s pitching was the difference.
Three Troy pitchers – Dario Rouse, Bradley Floyd and Clifton Brady combined on a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts and Tre’valyn Thomas broke open a close game with a two-run single in the fifth as Troy stayed perfect in sub-district play with a 5-2 victory.
The three Troy hurlers each tossed two innings a piece, keeping with the pattern Troy coaches have used throughout tournament play. Rouse walked one and struck out four, Floyd allowed one run on the one hit, walked three and struck out six while Brady closed it out, allowing one run, walking three and striking out six.
Troy got single runs in the first and second, but Elba managed a run on an error and two wild pitches to cut it to 2-1. Elba threatened to tie it in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs but Floyd got a strikeout to end the inning and keep Troy in the lead.
Troy added to its lead in the fifth, loading the bases on a walk, error and hit batter. After a force out at the plate, Thomas smoked a single down the first-base line to plate two runs. Justin Senn followed with an RBI-ground out to make it 5-1.
Elba got its final run in the bottom half of the inning on a walk, error and wild pitch. Brady walked the first batter in the sixth but retired the side in order via strikeout to end the game.
Troy managed just four hits of its own on the night, getting one each from Brady, Thomas, Dontae Harris and Douglas Hawkins.
Troy fell to the Enterprise Nationals 2-1 on Friday night, but played again for the sub-district title late Saturday.
Troy National moved into the championship game of the Dixie Minor Sub-District Tournament on Saturday night in Highland Home.
The Nationals defeated Greenville on Thursday night 10-0 and Georgiana on Friday 12-2 to advance.
William Teal, Jake Smith, Alex Adams and Ross Hixon led Troy with two hits each, while Wesley Taylor, Anthony McBride and David Fleming each had hits also for Troy.
Smith pitched the first three innings for Troy, striking out seven batters and allowing two hits. Will Starling closed the four-inning game for Troy, retiring all three batters faced.
Against Georgiana, Taylor and Wesley Hayes each had two hits. Starling, Adams, Hixon, McBride and Clay Massey contributed one hit apiece for Troy National.
Starling pitched the complete game for Troy. He gave up two hits and struck out eight.
Troy played Greenville in the title game on Saturday.
