Troy State goes through final scrimmage

The Troy State football team went through a mock-up scrimmage on Saturday as it prepares for the season opener on Sept. 1 at Nebraska.
The practice lasted for an hour and a half as the offense and defense both worked on game situations.
"This was one of the best mock-up scrimmages we’ve ever had," said head coach Larry Blakeney. "We covered a lot of things that can happen in a game."
Senior quarterback Brock Nutter sat out of the scrimmage due to an injury in his back that he suffered in practice Friday. He is expected to return to practice Monday.
The Trojans also worked extensively on special teams. Placekicker Drew Boetler was a perfect three-for-three on field goal attempts, the longest from 40 yards. He was also perfect on three PAT attempts.
The contest for the starting punter job continued with each candidate seeing significant time. Junior college transfer Roger Ridgeway had the longest punt of the day, with a 55-yard boot. Freshman walk-on Jeremy Schatz had two punts longer than 40 yards after starting practice on Thursday. Lance Lieb also had two punts longer than 40 yards.
"Roger had a couple of good ones," said Blakeney. "Lieb had a couple of good ones, as did Schatz. But what we’re missing his consistency. That’s what bothers me right now. We may end up taking three punters to Nebraska."
Since the scrimmage was early in the morning, the Trojans got together to watch Nebraska play TCU later in the afternoon.
The season opener will be televised on FOX Sports as part of the Big 12 syndication package. It can be seen in central Alabama on UPN Channel 67.
