Talladega, Ala. – On Monday morning, less than 15 minutes after Bill Elliott stood in Victory Lane in the Pocono Mountains, Clyde Galloway was standing in line at the ticket office at Talladega Superspeedway.
"This is the year Bill returns to his glory days at Talladega," said Galloway. "I just know it. Watching him and Sterling (Marlin) battle yesterday afternoon reminded me of when those two ruled Talladega."
Galloway made up his mind Sunday night that he didn’t want to miss watching the NASCAR Winston Cup Series EA SPORTS 500 in person at Talladega on Oct. 6.
"I’m on my way to Bessemer, Alabama, to a job site this week and knew I needed to be at Talladega when the doors opened," said Galloway, who lives in Dahlonega, Ga. "I haven’t been to a race here in four or five years and I miss it. I miss seeing ‘Awesome Bill from Dawsonville’ winning all those races, too.
"So when he won last night, I made up my mind. The wife and me will be back here in October to watch that old No. 9 back in Victory Lane at Talladega."
Elliot and Marlin and the rest of the Winston Cup stars return to Talladega for the EA SPORTS 500 weekend, Oct. 3-6, 2002. The weekend kicks off on Thursday, Oct. 3 with qualifying for the ARCA RE/MAX Series Food World 300. Winston Cup Series qualifying is set for Friday, Oct. 4. Plenty of great seats remain for the entire weekend, including the two-day $60 ticket for the Allison Grandstand.
Elliot found Victory Lane at Talladega Superspeedway in the spring of 1985 and in the fall of 1987. He has claimed the pole at Talladega an amazing eight times, including six straight times from 1985-87.
Elliot has started on the outside pole five times at Talladega, including both events in 2000. Before he had to use a provisional in April, Elliot had qualified in the top five the past four races at Talladega.
As for Marlin, who continues to stay out front in the NASCAR Winston Cup points chase, he has found Victory Lane at Talladega twice, just like Elliot. Marlin won back-to-back at Talladega in the summer of 1995 and in the spring of 1996. Marlin has claimed three pole positions at Talladega.
Fans can make plans now to attend the EA Sports 500 weekend, Oct. 3-6, 2002. Call the ticket office at (256) 362-RACE or purchase online at talladegasuperspeedway.com.
Talladega Superspeedway officials announced earlier this summer the creation of a Limited Commemorative NASCAR Winston Cup Series Qualifying Day Ticket celebrating the tremendous success of Winston’s No Bull 5 Event at Alabama’s famed 2.66-mile tri-oval.
The ticket is $10, the same price as walk-up admission on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, during the EA SPORTS 500 Weekend. Fans can purchase the Commemorative Qualifying Day Tickets by calling the track’s ticket office or online.
Pictured on the front of the ticket are Talladega’s three winning drivers of the Winston No Bull 5 event: Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr., each celebrating in Victory Lane.
