Post 70 team wins again

Whether by rally or by rout, the Troy Post 70 American Legion baseball team swept its way to a tournament win over the weekend.

Even without normal stars Anthony Germain, Brett Pierce, Pete Van Horn and Matt Johnson for most of the weekend (the foursome were at a showcase in Birmingham until the final game), Troy still managed a perfect record.

The most amazing win was Troy's second of the tournament. Troy trailed West Alabama 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth and 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, but Troy put on an amazing rally in the bottom of the final inning to steal an 8-7 win.

Jeremy Jones hit a one-out triple to start the rally in the bottom of the seventh. Drew Walker reached on an error by the West Alabama short stop to score Jones. Lance Myers singled, as did Brett Birdsong, Tyson Pugh and Rob Reynolds in succession. All of those runners ended up scoring.

After Daniel Porter hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, Daniel Holder singled to keep the rally going. Zack Kilcrease singled to send the wining run home.

Troy started the tournament with a 13-4 win over West Blocton. Birdsong went 2-for-4 in that one, Chase Kelly went 3-for-3, Walker went 2-for-4 and Daniel Arute went 2-for-2.

Troy remained undefeated in the third game with an extra-inning affair. Troy needed eight innings to oust Thompson No. 2 by the score of 5-4.

Kelly led off the eighth inning with a double, and Walker followed with another double to send Kelly home.

Jake Kitchens scored in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra inning. Troy held a 3-1 lead until the top of the seventh, but Thompson scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

Troy took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Birdsong, Pugh and Reynolds singled to lead off the inning. All three came around to score.

The final game of the tournament was a breather for Troy. Troy led 4-0 after the first and 6-0 after two innings on the way to a 9-2 win over Thompson No. 1.

Jones, Germain, Kelly and Porter all scored in the first inning. Reynolds and Jones scored in the second to push the lead to 6-0.

Thompson managed to push across a run in the third, but Troy scored three more in the fourth to push the lead to 9-1. Thompson scored a final run to make it 9-2.

Troy will face Panama City today at 4 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
