Sara Southernland Kelley

Sara Southerland Kelley, 84, a longtime resident of Troy, Alabama, and recent resident of Birmingham, died on November 1, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November, 4, at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel in Troy with Revs. Dave Kirby, Richard Brooks, and Ernest Green officiating.

Graveside services will follow at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors at Dillard Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Kelley was a longtime educator in Pike County and her enthusiasm for learning and love for her Lord led her to positively impact the lives of the thousands of individuals she touched.

She earned her undergraduate degree from Troy State Teachers College and her master's degree from Troy State College.

She held teaching positions in the Houston County and Pike County school systems, and at Horace Mann School in Rock Island, Illinois.

In Pike County she served as Coordinator of Community Education, Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Director of the Right to Read Program, and Co-Chairman of the Multiple Sclerosis Board.

She was a member of the Mental Health Association, Association of Childhood Education, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, A.E.A, N.E.A., Phi Beta Kappa, Retired Teachers Association, Oak Grove United Methodist Church, and the Troy Women's Club.

Mrs. Kelley was honored as the Pike County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1990.

She remained active in Birmingham and served as President of the Resident's Council and church coordinator her final three years at Ridge View at Meadow Book Assisted Living Community.

She is survived by four children and spouses, 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include her four children, Roscoe Douglas Kelley, Jr. and Denise Sanford Kelley of Birmingham, Lavonya Kelley Chapman of Birmingham, Olivia Kelley Owen and Dave Owen of Houston, Texas, Dr. Benjamin Southerland Kelley and Kathy Kelley of Waco, Texas; her ten grandchildren, Kelley Chapman Larkin and Luke Larkin of Sarasota, Florida, Teresa Kelley and Denise Kelley of Birmingham, Wes Kelley and Amy Kelley of Montgomery, April Owen of Denver, Colorado, Kenneth Owen of Houston, Texas, and Aaron Kelley, Robin Kelley, Shannon Kelley, and Jordan Kelley of Waco, Texas; and great grandchild Kate Larkin.

Mrs. Kelley is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Wesley Southerland and Eula Lavonia Buie Southerland, and former husband Dr. Roscoe D. Kelley, Sr., of Troy.

Other family members include sisters Kathryn Nall, Louise Tyler, Lois Mixon and Ray Mixon, deceased brother Murray Southerland, deceased sister Delphine Southerland, all of Houston County, and sister-in-law Mildred Youngblood of Troy.

Pallbearers will be Carl Hussey, Jordan Kelley, Wes Kelley, Jeff Kervin, Donald Lee, Kenneth Owen, Jeffrey Tyler, and Kelley Youngblood.

Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, and former colleagues, Jane Carlisle, June Collier, Elizabeth Conner, Mavis Davis, Manell Langford, Mary Mitchell, Gladys Stephens, and Beverly Taylor.

Mrs. Kelley requested that memorial contributions be made to the Troy University Scholarship Fund, Troy University Foundation, 260 Adams Administration Building, Troy, AL

Faye T. Senn

Faye T. Senn, 80, of Troy died Sunday, October 31, 2004, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Brundidge Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bobby Hood officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Brundidge under the direction of Dillard Funeral Home of Brundidge.

Visitation will be held at Dillard Funeral Home in Brundidge Tuesday, November 2, 2004 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Survivors include her husband, James Senn of Troy; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia S. and Dan Channell of Murphy, North Carolina; two sons and daughters-in-law, James T. and Jane Senn of Brundidge and Joe D. and Grace Senn of Banks; six grandchildren, Yvon Brantley, Hope Senn and Jeff Ferguson, Joanna and Mark Kilpatrick, Mark and Debra Brantley, Paul and Sonia Powell and Jay Senn; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth T. Sallis of Fayetville Arkansas and Dora Duncan of Athens, Georgia.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Pallbearers will be Mark Kilpatrick, Mark Brantley, Jay Senn, Paul Powell, Charlie Senn and Chan Senn.

Thomas O'Neal Walters

Thomas O'Neal Walters, age 62, of Upatoi, Ga., died Sunday, October 31, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Upatoi United Methodist Church with Revs. Chip Grantham and Cindy Garrard officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Cemetery. The family received friends at their residence from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday.

He was born January 3, 1942, in Troy, the son of Emmett O. and Sarah DeBice. He had lived in Muscogee County for the past forty years and was a member of Upatoi United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Troy State University with a bachelor's of science degree in Elementary Education and master's in Education. He earned an education specialist designation from Georgia State University. He was employed 41 years with the Muscogee County School District serving as a classroom teacher, Director of ESEA, Assistant to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Personnel. Following retirement in 2001, he worked part time for the school district serving as director of teacher recruitment and employee relations. He fully retired June 30, 2004.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Goodroe Walters; and a daughter, Amy Carol Walters of Upatoi, Ga.

Memorials may be made to Upatoi United Methodist Church. Tante Funeral Home of Buena Vista, Ga., has charge of arrangements.
