ABBEVILLE - Abbeville won the coin toss before Friday night's game against third-ranked Pike County on Friday night.
That was pretty much the highlight for the Yellow Jackets.
The Bulldogs scored 13 touchdowns - a lethal combination of running, passing, defense and special teams - and pounded Abbeville 91-0. They never punted.
Combined with last week's 77-0 victory over Bullock County, Pike County has outscored its last two opponents 168-0. It was the Bulldogs' fourth straight shutout victory dating to the second game of the season.
James Jackson scored five touchdowns and rushed for 140 yards and three scores on 15 carries. He also returned a punt and an interception for TDs.
Darrell Reynolds started the onslaught with a 17-yard run for a score with 9:17 left in the first quarter. Jarmon Barrow's PAT made it 7-0. However, that was the only successful PAT kick for Pike County in the game.
Four minutes later, Jackson scored on a 9-yard run to make it 13-0.
Pike County's Martez Boykin then intercepted a D.J. Wiggins pass, although his touchdown return was nullified on a clipping penalty. Still, Jackson finished that drive on a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:04 left in the first quarter. The two-point try failed, leaving the score 19-0.
Abbeville faced a fourth-and-43 on its next possession and punted from its own 5. Quarterback Alonzo Foster completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Fred Caffie for a 25-0 lead with 11:42 left in the first half. The two-point try failed again.
Less than five minutes later, Foster threw a 24-yard touchdown strike to Tim Issac. Jackson ran in the two-point play to make it 33-0.
Abbeville turned the ball over on downs after a failed fake punt attempt on fourth-and-9 at the 48. Jackson again capped that drive with a 30-yard run with 2:15 left in the first half. Reynolds' two-point run made the halftime score 41-0.
Reynolds scored again with 9:42 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard run. He also made the two-point conversion for a 49-0 lead.
Fred Caffie then intercepted an Abbeville pass. Pike County fumbled the ball away, but Abbeville returned the favor one play later. The Bulldogs capitalized when Barrow scored on a 13-yard run with 2:52 left in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Blake Beacham threw a two-point pass to Issac that made the score 57-0.
Reynolds had a punt return called back on a penalty, but Beacham completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jackson on that drive. The PAT missed, leaving the score 63-0 with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.
Abbeville kept trying to move the ball through the air. That made for short possessions and a clock that stopped frequently.
Beacham hit Issac on a 32-yard touchdown pass with 11:12 left in the fourth quarter. He completed a two-point pass to Caffie for a 71-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Jackson stepped in a front of a Yellow Jacket pass and returned the interception 51 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed and PCHS led 77-0.
Abbeville fumbled on first down of its next possession. Two plays later, Jerel Foster scored on a 9-yard run. He also added the two-point conversion that made it 85-0.
The final score, mercifully, came with 4:35 remaining in the game. Beacham scored on an 11-yard run that gave Pike County its 91-0 lead.
For the game, Pike County threw for 212 yards and rushed for 384 yards for a total of 596 yards of offense.
Defensively, the Bulldogs held Abbeville to 50 yards passing - Wiggins was 4-for-21 with three interceptions - and minus-14 yards on the ground for a total of 36 yards.
Wiggins ran 11 times for minus-27 yards and tailback Marcus Cotton rushed four times for 13 yards.
The Bulldogs recovered two fumbles to go with the three interceptions.
Alonzo Foster was 3 for 7 passing for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Beachman was 5 of 8 for 93 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Reynolds also completed a pass for 31 yards.
Reynolds rushed 10 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Barrow carried three times for 24 yards and a score. Alonzo Foster had four carries for 44 yards. Jerel Foster had three carries for 51 yards and a touchdown. Quentine Thomas rushed three times for 47 yards. Beacham ran it three times for 12 yards and a score.
The Bulldogs celebrate homecoming this week against Dale County. They may celebrate a new ranking this week. Top-ranked and region rival T.R. Miller lost to Slocomb. No. 2 Oneonta defeated Springville.
Pike County should be no worse than second in Class 3A this week.
