The Troy Dixie Pre-Minors swept through the District IX tournament in Brantley, capping the sweep with a 22-10 win over the Enterprise 8 year olds in the championship game.
Troy went undefeated in the tournament and head coach Derek Wilkes said he could not be more happy for his guys.
&uot;We had great defense yet again,&uot; Wilkes said. &uot;Our team is so strong on defense and they had to come back in this one. But we did and we ended the game with 10 runs in the final inning.&uot;
Troy led Enterprise 4-1, but the score was 4-4 early in the game. Troy took a 6-4 lead, but then they were down 10-8 in the fifth inning, but took the lead back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 12-10 lead.
They poured it on with 10 runs in the final inning to end the game 22-10.
&uot;It was as exciting a game as I have ever been a part of,&uot; Wilkes said. &uot;Winning it all is just unbelievable and we felt like we were one of the better teams, but there is no way to describe how we feel in winning the tournament.&uot;
Wilkes said defense was the key to the tournament and the 10 runs allowed was the high point for Troy all tournament.
Wilkes said allowing only 10 runs in coach pitch is great and that was the most runs his team gave up all tournament.
&uot;I am speechless, but this is just so wonderful for the kids,&uot; Wilkes said.
This is the top of the peak for the Pre-Minor, but a state tournament is in the works for the 8 and under group next year.
