When the daffodils dare to bloom, that’s a sign for people around Pike County to begin thinking spring.

And, it’s time for farmers to begin making preparations to put their crops in the ground.

So, it’s just natural for the manager of the Pioneer Farmers Market to begin making plans for another successful market season.

“It’s time for us to begin making plans for the 2009 Pioneer Farmers Market and we would like the input of those who plan to participate this year,” said Pam Sanders, market manager.

“We’ll have our initial market meeting at 5:30 p.m on Thursday, Jan. 29 at the Pike County Extension Office on South Three Notch Street in Troy.”

“We invite all of those who plan to participate and those who want to know more about the benefits of the market to attend.”

Sanders said the market is open to any producers who grow the vegetables and fruits they plan to sell.

“A producer does not have to be a resident of Pike County to participate in the Pioneer Farmers Market,” she said.

“A farmers market is an opportunity for the producers to sell their products locally and for the consumers to get high-quality, farm-fresh produce at extremely good prices and support our local farmers at the same time.”

The Pioneer Market is in its sixth season and is coming off a very successful 2008 season.

“Last season, we had a very successful market,” Sanders said.

“We had a lot of repeat customers and good quality produce and a good variety. The market is conveniently located in the back parking lot of First Methodist Church of Troy.”

“I think people really appreciate the opportunity to buy locally and to buy from people they know. And, too, they enjoy the fellowship of shopping at a local farmers’ market.”

Sanders said the opening of the Pioneer Farmers Market depends on Mother Nature but each year they shoot for May through November.

“We encourage those producers who have been with us in the past to attend the Thursday night meeting and anyone who is interested in knowing more is also encourage to attend,” Sanders said.

“There is an application process for participation and we also need to hear the suggestions that could make our farmers’ market even more successful in 2009.”
