Troy’s 11-U girls soccer team had a chance to bring home a state title in its final game Sunday at the ARPA State Championships.
Unfortunately for Troy, a title was not meant to be, as Troy fell to Dothan 1-0.
“They’re heartbroken right now, but they tried hard,” said head coach Tim Bobo. “We expected a close game, but we just ended up on the wrong side of it this time. If we played them multiple times, I think we’d come out on the other side of it.”
Troy won each of its three previous matches to put itself in the position to play for a state title, including a big win over Fort Payne earlier Sunday.
Troy defeated Fort Payne 4-0 behind two pairs of goals from Meredith Motes and Kayla Dendy.
The team led 1-0 at the half, but midway through the second half, Motes and Dendy each scored a goal within two minutes of each other to push the lead to 3-0 and put the match out of reach.
“We did great again,” Bobo said. “Our girls are amazing. They impress me every time they go out and play. The conditions were not the best but they continued to push and drive through.”
While the season came to a disappointing end for Troy, Bobo said the experience was still a positive one.
“It’s a bunch of outstanding parents and outstanding kids,” Bobo said. “It’s been a very uplifting experience for me.”
