Troy’s new postmaster comes with her share of experience.
Debra Alums, welcomed to the office late April, started working in a post office 33 years ago, just after college.
“I came back with a psychology degree, and then there wasn’t much to do with that degree,” Alums said. “So I went and took a test and was hired as a PTF clerk and guaranteed to work only two hours a week.”
It was planned as just a temporary job.
“I was going to do that until I decided what I wanted to do when I grow up,” she said. “I guess I haven’t grown up yet.”
In her 33 years of post office experience, Alums has been a postmaster for the last 28 years. She was postmaster in Ozark and Daleville, and then she worked in Montgomery and Auburn as the manager of operations for those areas.
But, when the job for postmaster was opened in Troy, she knew it was right place.
So, the Ariton-native, Dothan resident found herself much closer to home with her move to Troy.
Alums said she enjoys her work in the post office.
“The job’s as interesting as you make it,” she said.
Alums is married and has a daughter and a granddaughter.
