Union Springs couple killed in Monday crash

A Union Springs couple died Monday in Pike County in a traffic accident.
According to Alabama State Trooper Spokesman Kevin Cook, Rita D. Tarver, 57, and her husband, 64, were traveling in a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria when they collided with a 2000 Freightliner driven by Jeffrey Thompson, 42, of Elba, at approximately 12:30 p.m. Monday.
The Tarvers were traveling on County Road 6602 when they failed to yield to Thompson, who was traveling on Alabama Highway 223.
Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams pronounced Mrs. Tarver dead at the scene, while Mr. Tarver was transported to Baptist South Hospital. Where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.
Thompson was transported to Troy Regional Medical center, and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
