Leon Fowler

Helton Leon Fowler, age 82, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, with his family by his side at the Bethany House in Auburn, Ala.

Funeral services for Mr. Fowler will be Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at 1 p.m., at Green Hills Funeral Home in Troy, Ala., with Rev. Michael Alsop officiating. He will be laid to rest at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Fowler will be Monday from 11:30 a.m., until 1 p.m., at the funeral home. Due to inclement weather, graveside services will not be held.

Mr. Fowler was born Jan. 14, 1928 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. He attended Luverne High School and Troy State Teacher’s College, where he lettered in all sports. He was an outstanding athlete and sportsman and was a true avid fisherman at the Colley Pond. Mr. Fowler was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy.

His interests included church, family, gardening, sports and fishing. He served honorably for two years in the U.S. Army with the 711 Charlie Battery of the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Division.

Mr. Fowler is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Velma White Fowler, his sister, Grace Catrett (Rex), and one brother, Joe Fowler.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nell Moore Fowler; three daughters: Virginia Crumpler (Denny); Helen Morgan (Terry); and Lynne Austin (Buddy). Four grandchildren: Kim Crumpler May; Jeffrey Morgan (Laurie); Leigh Morgan Gaines (Matt); and Will Austin. Two great-grandchildren: Landon May and Jacob Wilson as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church at 105 George Wallace Drive, Troy, Alabama, 36081, or to the Bethany House at 1171 Gateway Drive, Auburn, Alabama, 36830.
