Please support letter carriers’ food drive

We’re all used to looking in our mailboxes for bills, junk mail and the occasional catalog or two. Today, though, we need to look in our mailboxes for something else – the opportunity to help someone else.
The U.S. Postal Service Letter Carriers are sponsoring their annual food drive today and it’s an opportunity for us to be generous.
Yes, we’ve been asked to give – and give generously – in the past weeks. Tragedies across our state have prompted Pike Countians to dig deep and give to many causes. And this is one more that needs our help.
The food drive today is seeking canned food items which will be donated to the Salvation Army food bank. These canned goods will be used throughout the year to feed the hungry and needy right here in Pike County.
And while the tragedies of the tornadoes in North Alabama and the flooding in Mississippi and Louisiana are fresh on our minds, we cannot ignore the fact that hundres of our neighbors right here in Pike County will find themselves in need of Salvation Army assistances this year. Whether due to disasters or tragedies, or simply economic circumstances beyond their control, these folks will turn to the Salvation Army for a helping hand. And we can do something to make sure they have the help they need.
Please take time today to reach into your pantry and share some of your blessings with those less fortunate. Donations of any non-perishables such as canned meats, soups, beans, pastas, canned vegetables, peanut butter, canned juice, cereal or even boxed rice are welcome. The donations can be placed in a bag in or on your mailbox and your letter carrier will collect the cans when he or she delivers your mail today.
It’s the best kind of delivery we can make.
