Montgomery Police have confirmed they caught the man suspected of stealing from an accident victim’s mother in the Baptist South Hospital’s SICU.
Detectives arrested Steven Jerome Williams, 35, of Montgomery, on Friday and charged him with second-degree theft of property and obstruction of justice by using a false identity, according to MPD Sgt. Donna Mackey.
Williams is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a total bond of $30,000.
Williams was allegedly caught on camera stealing Tammy Hussey’s property. Hussey’s son, an Alabama Department of Transportation flagman, was in critical condition at the time of the theft. He was struck by a vehicle on U.S. Hwy. 231 while on the job. Hobi Hussey died on Dec. 26.
When Hussey stepped away from the intensive care waiting room to get breakfast about 9:45 on Dec. 21, police say Williams stole Hussey’s laptop, overnight bag, her son’s wallet, check book, state ID card and several other items. All the cash she had with her, except $30 she’d put in her purse, was in the bottom of the briefcase with her laptop.
“The only thing he left was the blanket and pillow,” Hussey said. She had thought her things would be safe because of all the people she’d spent time with in the waiting room, the nurses and security.
Baptist Hospital security cameras caught the thief on tape and hospital officials provided photos to the police department, but had no further comment on the incident.
Mackey said she could not disclose at this time if any property had been recovered from Williams.
