Troy fell to Sand Mountain 4-1 in the opening round of the Ponytails X-Play State Tournament at the Troy Sportsplex on Saturday. The host squad then rebounded to defeat Thomsville 12-7 later in the day.
Sand Mountain struck in the bottom of the first with three runs. Troy chipped away in the second when Sidney Armstrong reached on a fielder’s choice then stole second and third. Armstrong would score on a passed ball. That would be all the offense Troy could muster however. Sand Mountain added a run in the second to cap the scoring.
Rose Snyder started in the circle and was 1-for-2 at the plate. Tucker Earles was 1-for-2 with a double. Kelsey Gibson and Nelsey Leverette were both 1-for-1.
In Troy’s win against Thomasville, Earles and Ashton McCloud singled and scored in the second inning. Addyson Bryan knocked in one with a double. Combined with Armstrong’s run, Troy led 3-0.
Troy exploded for seven runs in the third. Holly Hughes’ 3-RBI triple blew the game open. Earles and Gibson also had RBI hits in the frame while Sydni Garret and Molly Kate Sanders, who was the starting pitcher contributed with hits.
Troy added two more runs in the fourth while Thomasville scattered runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth.
Troy will play Underwood at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
