Troy failed to slow down a hot-handed Holton Hunsaker as the junior scored a career-high 32 points in a 86-82 defeat of the Trojans in double-overtime at Trojan Arena on Saturday.
With Troy leading 66-62 with 2:35 to play in regulation, Hunsaker made a layup to make it a two-point game. Later, Hunsaker threw up an off-balance three-pointer. The ball missed rim and backboard and fell into the hands of Alfonzo Hubbard who banked it off the glass as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
Troy (4-6, 0-2 Sun Belt) took a 73-70 lead with 1:25 to go in the first overtime. Hunsaker once again found the net, a three-pointer to send the game to a second overtime.
The Trojans went ahead by three early in the period and led again by two with 3:09 left, but Utah Valley (5-6) took over down the stretch to walk away with the win.
All five Troy starters finished the game in double figures. Ray Chambers led the Trojans with a career-high 17 points. He also added eight rebounds. Hunter Williams scored 13, while Antoine Myers, Deonata Jethroe and Tevin Calhoun scored 11 each.
The Trojans shot 40.7 percent from the field while Utah Valley hit 45 percent of its shots.
Troy will look to snap its four-game losing streak on the road as the team faces Alabama State on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
