The Charles Henderson Trojans girls basketball team backed up its undefeated area record with a convincing win over bottom-seeded Bullock County on Thursday night.
A tight game early on, Charles Henderson blew it wide open in the second and third quarters to rout the Hornets 49-29 at Betty Wagoner Hall.
The Trojans outscored Bullock County 29-10 in the second and third quarters to put the game away early on.
The tight game early on, 12-9 Charles Henderson at the end of the first quarter, forced the Trojans to change their gameplan.
“It took us a while to adjust to their defense,” said Charles Henderson head coach Dyneshia Jones. “They came out in a press man, and we expected a zone. We had to make some changes but when we did they really played well.”
Charles Henderson received good performances from a host of players, but none compared to the numbers put up by freshman India Blakely.
Blakely carved up the Hornet defense for 23 of Charles Henderson’s 49 points.
The night even impressed her coach.
“She is a girl with an amazing basketball IQ,” said Jones. “Our players recognize how good she is, and will set screens and find ways to get her open. India is not afraid of going to the bucket either.”
Charles Henderson was helped along in the first half with excellent free throw shooting.
The Trojans nailed their first seven shots from the charity stripe, and didn’t miss untill the six minute mark of the second quarter.
Charles Henderson will have a long lay off, as the title games against Ashford will not be played until Monday afternoon at 5:30 p.m.
“It is what we have worked all year for,” said Jones. “It would not look good if we went 6-0 in the area, and didnt bring home an area tournament championship. We will practice early on Sunday and Monday because we want that win.”
