Nationally acclaimed storyteller Suzi “Mama” Whaples will be June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater on June 13.
Whaples will be back at the We Piddle Around Theater by popular demand. She was a featured storyteller at the Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival in January 2011 and folks said that they wanted that “funny lady” back.
“The June Buggin’ events at the We Piddle Around Theater are ‘as magical and unpredictable as the flight of a June bug’ and this one will be no exception, said Mernette Bray, a member of Brundidge Historical Society’s storytelling committee.
“‘Suzi ‘Mama’ Whaples is one of those storytellers that can make you split your sides laughing one minute and choke to keep back tears the next minute,” Bray said.
“Several members of the storytelling committee saw Suzi Whaples at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tenn. and we knew that she would be a natural fit for our Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival. She quickly became a favorite with our storytelling audiences. We are excited to have her back June Buggin’ with us.”
Whaples is from West Virginia and Bray said that she “talks like us” so there’s an immediate connection with the audience.
The stories that Whaples tells are from her experiences.
“What is so entertaining about her stories is that you sit there thinking, ‘I know somebody just like that’ or ‘something like that happened to me.’” Bray said. “You know exactly what she’s talking about.”
Whapels’ stories intertwine the poignant and the flat-out hilarious.
“She is perfect for our June Buggin’s audience.”
Tickets for June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater are $20 and include the pre-show, the luncheon (11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.) catered by Sit ‘N Sip, a “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die” restaurant and stories by Suzi “Mama” Whaples.
Tickets may be purchased at studio 116 in downtown Brundidge or by calling 334-735-3125.
