MONTGOMERY — Goshen took the first step towards its season-long goal Friday afternoon, sweeping its first match of the AHSAA Volleyball Super Regionals in Montgomery.
The LaDee Eagles knocked off Flomaton 25-20, 25-8 and 25-23 in straight sets to advance to the second round.
Goshen had to rally from behind in the first and third sets to get the win, and head coach Amy Warrick said her team didn’t play well at times.
“Our serves were not what we wanted, and our defense was a little shaky at times,” said Warrick. “I chalk the first set game up to jitters. The second game we were on cruise control, and then the third was something entirely different. We need to be more consistent tomorrow.”
Goshen will meet Zion Chapel in the second-round match at 1:30 p.m.
The road to the state Elite Eight is clear for the Eagles, knock off the Lady Eagles and they are in. Lose to Zion, and the season is over.
The Lady Rebels played on the court adjacent to Goshen Friday afternoon, and Warrick got a good look at what Zion likes to do.
“They are a great team, and always are,” Warrick said. “They like to dink the ball over the net at times, and then others they like to swing on it. The biggest thing for us is to be mentally ready for a competitive game. We can’t fall behind early like we did today. Tomorrow will be a good one.”
Goshen and Zion Chapel meet at 1:30 P.m. on court 1 at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl, in Montgomery.
