If he so chooses, John Johnson won’t have to travel far to continue his football career. In fact, he will only have to walk across the street.
Johnson, a senior receiver and running back at Charles Henderson, told The Messenger Monday afternoon that he has received a formal scholarship offer from Troy University.
“I’m not rushing on a decision,” Johnson said. “Signing Day isn’t until the first Wednesday of February, so I have some time to think about things.”
Johnson said he has also received interest from Chattanooga.
The soft-spoken and uber-atheltic Johnson accounted for 2,474 all-purpose yards during his senior campaign. He was the go-to player for the Trojans as they rolled to a 14-1 record and runner-up finish the Alabama High School Athletic Association 4A division.
Johnson also racked up 36 touchdowns during his final season in orange and blue. Johnson scored 25 rushing touchdowns, 10 receiving and one on a punt return.
Johnson was named to The Messenger’s All-Area team following his junior and senior seasons, and took home the 2013 All-Area Player of the Year honor as well.
Despite torching opposing defenses the last two seasons, Johnson said he hadn’t made his mind up to pursue football until recently.
“I’m leaning football now, definitely,” Johnson said. “I was thinking baseball for a while, but the last two seasons made me change my mind.”
Players from around the United States can officially sign National Letters of Intent on February 5, 2014.
