Ready for sale: Cattlemen prepping for annual auction

From claw-foot bathtubs to toys and tractors, this year’s auction at Cattleman Park has something for everyone.
The auction raises money the Pike County Cattlemen’s Association uses for facility improvements and education programs for local students.
“It is really a good fundraiser for us,” said Ed Whatley, executive director of the association. “We charge a consignment of 10 percent to sell items at the auction. We also have a buyback option if the item doesn’t meet the owner’s minimum bid.”
The City of Troy and the Pike County Commission will be selling surplus inventory such as laptops, vehicles and office furniture.
Because Pike County and the City of Troy use the auction to sell surplus items, the Cattlemen call it an equipment sale. But, anyone can bring in items to sell.
However space is limited. Since the association started accepting consignments last Saturday, nearly half of the lot is full. Once full, Whatley said they would have to turn people away.
Whatley’s favorite parts of the auction are the variety of people who attend and the variety of items offered.
Families come for the bikes and farmers come for the tractors. There are outdoor furniture sets, grills and tons of tools.
“One of the first items that came in looks like a car radiator, but it’s a homemade fountain,” Whatley said. “It stands 7 feet high.”
He has his eye on some cafe booths.
The auction lot is open daily for previewing items or dropping consignment items off. Hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday’s auction will start at 8 a.m., with a separate vehicle auction that will start at 10 a.m. For more information, contact the association at 566-0892 or by email at Pikecountycattlemen@troycable.net.
