Game after game in the 2014 season, Pike Liberal Arts’ Chandler Avant and Charles Henderson’s Chase Smartt wowed spectators, opposing teams, and apparently sports writers from across the state with their efforts.

Both Avant and Smartt were named to the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Association Super All-State Team Saturday.

The Super All-State Team is made up of the top 10 players from across the state of Alabama, regardless of classification.

Avant was named the AISA Player of the Year, along with Hitter of the Year and First Team Shortstop, last week. In 2014, Avant, an Alabama signee, batted .505, knocked 10 homers and drove in 36 RBIs.

On the mound, he was a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities in 2014, and picked up 4 wins along the way.

“We have said it a bunch, but Chandler is a great ball player and a great boy,” said former Pike Liberal Arts head coach Butch Austin. “He will go on to be a great college baseball player, and Alabama is sure getting a good one.”

Smartt batted .414 with four home runs and 54 RBIs. He led the Trojans in nearly every offensive category including doubles, triples, slugging percentage and total bases.

“Chase loves the game of baseball,” said Derek Irons, Charles Henderson coach. “One of his greatest strengths is his game smarts. He always knows what the job is and wants to get it done.”

A pair of left-handed pitchers earned the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s highest high school baseball and softball honors.

Ardmore senior Cody Reed was selected Mr. Baseball and Winfield junior Madi Moore was named Miss Softball.

Vanderbilt signee Reed is a hard-throwing left-hander who was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round, No. 54 overall, of Thursday’s Major League Baseball first-year player draft and the Class 4A Pitcher and Player of the Year.

He led Ardmore to the state championship series before falling to Charles Henderson.

Reed (10-2) struck out 226 batters in 92 innings, allowing only six earned runs for an 0.46 ERA. Opponents batted .087 against Reed, scoring 10 runs with only 28 hits.

Six of his 10 wins were shutouts – including a 6-0 win over Charles Henderson to open the best-of-three championship series – five were no-hitters and he threw a perfect game.

Reed is the only repeat Super All-State baseball player.

“He is a very special talent,” Irons said. “There is no doubt in my mind that he meant more to his team than any other player on a any other roster in the state of Alabama. I fully believe we will be watching him on television in the big leagues in a few years.”
