Troy Post 70 took advantage of four ninth-inning Zion Chapel errors to take a 9-4 win Wednesday night.
Troy and Zion Chapel entered the final inning tied at four, but a pair of errors to open the stanza allowed Troy to out two on. Hunter Windham gave Post 70 the lead with a RBI put out to first. Later in the inning, Parker Watts picked up an RBI on the third Zion error of the inning. The decisive blow of the final inning came off the bat of Eric Lee.
Lee sent a shot to left that was mishandled by the ZC left fielder, resulting in the final two Troy runs.
Parker Watts slammed the door on Zion Chapel by striking out the side in the home half of the ninth.
“I thought we played pretty well,” said Troy head coach Tanner Hicks. “We are definitely improving in a lot of areas that we struggled with earlier in the year. I thought we finished strong today and finally started getting some balls off the barrel.”
Jacob Free, a star for Brantley, got the start on the mound and turned in a gem of a day.
Free threw five innings of perfect baseball and struck out six.
“Jacob did a great job coming out and starting for us,” Hicks said. “Kevin (Donavan, winning pitcher) came in and worked and Parker came in and closed the door. That was big.”
Troy will host the Flag Day Classic this weekend at Riddle-Pace Field and Frazier Field. The tournament begins Friday.
