Troy Angels advance to title game with win over Greenville

Dominant pitching is what gave the Troy Angels a key win in their second Sub-District Tournament game. The Angels pitchers struck out a total 12 batters, five looking, in a 6-1 win over Greenville Monday night.

Head coach Matt Leverette said his team is in a great position with pitching going into the championship game. All of the girls have at least a one complete game left to pitch and he added they have managed them because they are all good.

“We plan to use whoever is hot at the time and we are going to use everyone we got,” he said.

Starting pitcher Sadie Leverette struck out a total eight batters in three innings of pitching. She struck out four looking and had a groundout to first. She ended the first inning with three straight strikeouts.

Relief pitcher Dannah Dawson entered in the top of the fourth inning and added four more strikeouts with two looking. She gave up only one hit and a double.

“This win puts us in a position that we will go to District, but we want to finish this tournament tomorrow night by winning it all,” he said. He added that this was not their best game, but overall the girls played good and as a team. Also, he said they all picked one another up and played together.

Greenville’s only run was scored late in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Going into tomorrow’s championship game one improvement Leverette wants to see is his all-stars being more selective with the pitches they swing at. He said they have to get a good pitch to hit and get a good swing on it.

The Angels will take on Crenshaw County Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Troy Sportsplex on Field 7. If necessary they will play at 8:00 p.m.

“We are going to play hard, have fun and finish it tomorrow,” he said.
