For the second time this season, the Troy women’s basketball team has won six-straight games.
Thursday night in San Marcos, Texas, the Troy women ran away in the second half in a 75-59 win over Texas State.
Ronita Garrett led the Trojans (18-9, 13-5) with a 24-point, 12-rebound performance, her 19th double-double of the season.
Caitlyn Ramirez posted a career-high 16 rebounds, 10 of which came in the first half.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw Troy shoot 44 percent from the field, the Trojans finished strong, orchestrating a 6-0 run to take a 36-33 lead going into halftime.
Troy completely dominated the second half, holding Texas State to just 25 percent shooting after opening up on a 13-0 run.
Troy’s hot shooting continued, as it outscored Texas State 19-0 in the opening minutes of the second half.
In that time, Texas State went 0-of-9 from the field and committed five turnovers.
Texas State’s Taeler Deer hit a jumper with 14:54 to go in the game, but by that point, Troy had already taken a commanding 49-35 lead.
“Texas State shot great in the first half,” Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. “In the second half we changed defenses, and only intended to stay in that defense for two or three minutes, just to throw them off a little. But it was working well and we stuck with it.”
With just over nine minutes to go, Texas State made one last run at the lead, scoring nine-straight points to cut the margin to 54-48.
But with six minutes to go, Ashley Beverly-Kelley hit a jumper that sparked one last Troy 10-0 run as the Trojans went on to lead by as many as 19.
Beverly-Kelley recorded 12 points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Thursday was just the second game this month that Beverly-Kelley, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, had failed to score at least 20 points.
Deer scored 13 points for the Bobcats who lost their second straight game. Erin Peoples led Texas State with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Troy will return to the court Saturday in its final home game of the season against Georgia State.
Troy’s four seniors will be honored at halftime of the men’s game.
