The Distinguished Young Women organizers will hold their interest meeting for 2016 at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Studio in Downtown Troy. Tenth and eleventh grade girls who reside in Pike County are encouraged to come.
“Distinguished Young Women participants are young women interested in education, their community and being their best,” said Candy Shaughnessy, director of Distinguished Young Women of Pike County. “The program is a fun program where girls learn various life skills, connect with other girls their age, and are introduced to various aspects of their community.”
During the interest meeting, the girls will discuss all the things they need to know about being joining the Distinguished Young Women of Pike County. They will learn about workshops that introduce and teach life skills, such as interviewing skills, how to apply for scholarships, how to introduce themselves and etiquette and other workshop topics. Other topics include stage make-up, stage presence, talent, etc. They will also see examples of dresses that are appropriate to wear during the program and examples of what can be done in the talent portion.
“I believe women should be strong, feel good about themselves, be educated, make a difference and contribute to their community,” Shaughnessy said. “Distinguished Young Women promotes being your best. I want to help young women be their best.”
Tenth-grade girls can sign up to be in the Little Sisters Program. These girls serve as a support group for the participants. Eleventh grade girls can sign up to be a participant. All girls planning to be a participant need to bring an adult, preferably a parent or guardian.
Little Sisters will be able to sigh up on Sunday for the Little Sisters program. Participants are able to sign up online.
