Summer is still in full swing; however school is quickly approaching. With that in mind, the McNabb family is hosting the third annual Annie L McNabb School Giveback to provide school supplies for any students in attendance.

According to Vachon McNabb Watts, the picnic is held in honor of her mother, Annie Lewis McNabb, who passed away four years ago. The other siblings hosting the giveaway are David McNabb, Tracy McNabb and Maxie McNabb.

“My mother loved the community and worked with youth at her church, First Missionary Baptist Church,” Watts said. “We thought this was a great way to give back to the community.”

Watts, along with her siblings, will host the event at Murphree Park on Murphree Street in Troy. Watts said the event not only helps the community, but it helps the family continue to heal after losing the mother.

She said it is an informal event with picnic foods that will be served, such as hotdogs and popcorn, and the kids can play and have fun at the park.

“We just have a fun time,” Watts said. “We have local ministers come and pray and we are trying to incorporate local officials this year.”

Watts said that the event has grown the past three years and expects more to come this year.

“It has grown every year,” she said. “Last year we had about 60-70 people show up. We hope it continues to grow.”

Supplies will be given out until they are gone. Watts and her family provide the supplies themselves and ask local churches for support in the event.

“God is so good,” she said. “Last year we had the exact amount of supplies for the amount of people that showed up.”

The picnic will be Aug. 1 from noon until 1 p.m.

“We’re just excited that we are able to do this and excited about coming home to do the Back to School Picnic in honor of our mother,” Watts said. “It’s a great way to pay it forward for what the community has done for us.”

Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade are encouraged to come and enjoy the event and receive school supplies.
