After losing in round one on Friday night the American Legion Post 70 17U team came away with a 7-6 victory in a must win game over Northwest Alabama Saturday afternoon.
In a double-elimination format, Post 70 was facing elimination with a loss.
On Friday night in a 2-1 loss to Florence, Post 70 failed to capitalize on the few chances they received.
On Saturday, however, Post 70 more than capitalized on most of their opportunities.
After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, Northwest Alabama jumped out in the second inning on a two run homerun by Chase Langley.
Troy answered quickly in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits.
Jack Knight led off the inning with a walk followed by single by Hunter Jones. After a sacrifice bunt by Connor Davis moved up both Knight and Jones, Andrew Griggs scored Knight from third base.
Hunter Windham singled and Logan Thompson was able to reach first base on a ball that flew over the first baseman’s head, scoring Griggs from third base for the third run of the inning.
John Kelsoe and Mackenzie Hicks both drove in the innings final two runs giving Post 70 a 5-1 lead heading into the third inning.
Northwest Alabama was able to score at least one run in four straight innings starting in the second.
In the third they scored a run after their first two batters reached base via a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners, Brand Brinkman singled driving in the third run. North Alabama added three more runs in the next two innings to tie the game heading into the sixth inning.
Post 70 got the inning started with Griggs, Windham, and Thompson all reaching base via the walk.
With the leading run on third base, Kelsoe hit a ball to left field deep in enough to score the winning run for Post 70.
With the win post 70 advances to the next round, they will play Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
