Fifth Saturday begins series of fall events

The Fifth Saturday event this weekend will kick off the Fall Parties on the Square in Downtown Troy.
Similar to the first Fifth Saturday event held in May, the event will open with an open-mic session followed by entertainment by BlackBerry Breeze.
Leigh Anne Windham with the City of Troy said that the goal for this event was not only to bring families out to enjoy the Downtown Troy area and have a good time, but the City of Troy hopes to appeal to the college students and provide them with something fun to do on the weekends.
“The college experience for these students is so important to the City of Troy,” Windham said. “We feel like events like this will provide a positive experience, and we want to be able to give them more and more things to get them to stay in town on the weekends.”
Windham said that when the students come to the Fifth Saturday event, they could see all that Downtown Troy has to offer.
“All of our shops and boutiques carry merchandise that the students would be interested in,” Windham said. “Our restaurants serve pizza, beer on tap and three of our restaurants offer live music. There are so many of our businesses that our college students would want to come back to, and they will definitely find something they enjoy.”
Windham said that while BlackBerry Breeze is the main entertainment, the open-mic time is not something to be missed.
“We had open-mic at the first event, and it went over really well,” Windham said. “Everybody really enjoyed it.”
Windham said that vocalists of all ages took the stage, and the crowd was impressed and had a great time.
“Some of the vocalists were kids, and everyone was blown away,” Windham said. “There are still some spots available for the open-mic, and if you are a vocal artist, then we encourage you to be part of the Fifth Saturday event.”
During the event, restaurants will be offering food and drink specials, and merchants will be participating, as well.
The Fifth Saturday event will be Saturday, beginning with open-mic from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with BlackBerry Breeze headlining at 6 p.m.
