Elm Street Road now open for traffic

Elm Street Road reopened for traffic about 2 p.m. Friday.
“It’s officially open,” said Mike Davis, assistant general manager for the Utilities Department with the City of Troy. “It’s ready for traffic.”
The road was closed May 28 to allow crews to repave nearly three miles of the road and construct a new bridge and culvert to resolve flooding and drainage issues on the road.
District 2 Councilman Greg Meeks was pleased on Friday with the road opening.
“I’ve already driven up and down it,” Meeks said. “I know that the people of Districts 1 and 2 are going to be pleased. This is a road that we are going to be very proud of.”
The work was the final of three projects approved in 2012 through a partnership between the City of Troy and Pike County to use federal ATRIP funds for street repairs. Improvements and repaving on both Enzor Road and Henderson Highway already have been completed, but the Elm Street Road work was delayed for more than a year.
“I’m just grateful that it’s reopened and very thankful for all the patience of the public during this time,” said Troy Mayor Jason Reeves. “I know it’s been very inconvenient for a lot of people, but we’re glad to see that it’s done.”
Residents who use the road to travel to and from Troy have been forced to take a detour since May 28 while the repairs were completed. Prior to that, they fought poor road conditions, potholes and flooding issues on the road for several years.
Reeves said original plans called for resurfacing the nearly three miles and reconstructing the existing drainage culvert. However, 10-year traffic studies indicated a significant growth for the area and forced a change in plans to include a 40-foot wide suspension bridge instead of the drainage culverts.
“It’s a road that we can be proud of for many, many years to come. It’s designed and built to accommodate growth … we’re where we need to be for the future,” Reeves said.
