Original Story:
Pike County remained under a flash flood watch until 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve as heavy rains and flooding prompted concerns in the area.
Pike County EMA Director Jeanna Barnes sent out a civil emergency message around midday on Thursday, telling Pike County residents to stay off the roads except in emergency situations.
“That doesn’t mean all the roads are closed,” she said. “To officially close a road we have to have a barricade across it.
“We sent out this message for the safety of the public.”
Barnes said some areas of the county have reported up to 14 inches of rain in the last 24 hours, causing a rapidly changing flooding situation.
Barnes said the EMA is asking residents to stay off roadways except for emergency or necessary travel. “We don’t want people going around looking for damage, because the crews are still out there assessing the situation,” she said. “It’s going to keep raining and we’re going to have more problems.”
Those problems include flooding across roadways and bridges, sinkholes and sloughing roadsides.
According to Barnes, the roads actually closed include:
• Highway 29 from Josie to the Pike County line;
• Highway 93 from Lakeview Cemetery to Pike County Road 4408 (Pronto Road), essentially from Brundidge to Banks;
• Pike County Road 6647;
• Pike County Road 6648;
• Pike County Road 6622;
• Pike County Road 3319 near Whitewater Church, due to flood water over bridges.
Troy Mayor Jason Reeves said no streets within the city limits of Troy have been closed. “All our roadways are open,” he said. “Obviously we encourage our residents to use caution due to the weather.”
In Brundidge, police said the only roadway officially closed in Highway 93, although several streets have seen localized flooding.
Other areas of concern noted by Barnes include:
• City of Brundidge: Clayton and Johnson Streets flooded
• Highway 125 flooded approximately ½ mile past Mount Olive Church
• Pike County Road 3316, bridge flooded
• Pike County Road 4427, impassable
• Pike County Road 4419, water on roadway near Highway 10
• Pike County Road 6643, one lane flooded.
• Pike County Road 6632, water on roadway
• Pike County Road 5511(Brundidge) – flooding in various locations
• Pike County Road 3326 is closed
Barnes said the best advice to residents is to remember if you can’t see the roadway, don’t try to drive across it.
