Barbara Homann of Brundidge will be inducted in the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame on Sunday at First Baptist Church in Montgomery.
Homann will be honored with the Alabama Department of Senior Services’ Volunteer Senior Honorary Award.
Members of the R.E. Barr Senior Nutrition Center in Brundidge nominated Homann for the prestigious award.
“We wanted to nominate Barb for this award because of her dedication to the seniors at our center and to the Brundidge community,” said Martha Hall, Brundidge Nutrition Center director.
Hall said, in nominating Homann, she was also being recognized for her long and continuing volunteer spirit that was rooted when her mother was president of the senior center in Rapids, Wisconsin for about 17 years.
“Volunteering has always been a part of Barb’s life and we are so proud that she will be recognized by the State of Alabama,” Hall said. “She is most deserving of this award. She is my right arm and I don’t know what I would do without her. Barb is a lifelong volunteer and she is a sweet, sweet lady.
Homann said that volunteerism has been and continues to be a part of her life.
“It’s just who I am and what I do,” Homann said.
“I enjoy doing things for others. My enjoyment span of volunteerism is pre-k children and seniors. I owned and operated a day care center in Wisconsin for nine years and taught Sunday school for pre-K for 12 years. I really enjoy the young children and, of course, I enjoy senior adults.”
Homann said young children just bring so much joy into life and senior adults have much to contribute “if people will take time to listen.”
There are few, if any, monetary benefits of volunteerism. Homann wouldn’t take any if offered. The rewards of volunteerism, she said, come in the good feelings that come with having done something good for others.
“I just enjoy doing what I’m doing,” Homann said with a smile. “Volunteering brings me joy and that’s enough.”
As a member of the R.E. Barr Nutrition Center, Homann organizes, publishes and distributes Chatter Box, a center newsletter that is in its 10th year.
She conducts Bingo twice a month and directs an exercise program once a week. She facilitates a greeting card workshop and the cards are included in homebound meals.
She assists with scheduling activities, day trips, entertainment and speakers for the seniors and keeps a scrapbook of the center’s activities.
Homann is active in her church, Brundidge United Methodist where she is a member of the Evangelism Committee.
She has been a member of the South Central Development Commission for the past 10 years and is a member of the Ombudsman Advisory Council Area Agency on Aging for Long Term Care.
Homann and her husband, Homer, moved to Brundidge from Wisconsin in 2003. Both are involved in community and church activities on a volunteer basis.
