In speaking for Dr. Seuss, Thing One and Thing Two, let children know that “The more that you read; The more things you will know. The more that you learn. The more places you will go.”

That being true, Teresa Colvin, children and young adult director at the Troy Public Library, said the 250 readers, ages 4 to 18, that participated in the TPL Summer Reading Program will be knowing, learning and going at an accelerated speed when they begin school in just a few weeks.

“Children that do not read over the summer months experience what is called the ‘summer slide.’ Their reading skills diminish to some degree because those skills are not being use and that connection to literacy is not being made,” Colvin said.

“We were excited that so many children and young adults participated in our summer reading program and continued to hone their reading and comprehension abilities.”

The Top Readers in the TPL Summer Reading were recognized at the summer celebration party Tuesday night at Xtreme Athletics.

“The number of books read by the young readers and the number of pages read by the young adults is astounding,” Colvin said. “And, that these top readers read because they love to read and to learn and that is the goal of the TPL Summer Reading Program – to encourage young people to read and to learn.”

Twenty top readers where recognized for their accomplishments at the celebration party and what they accomplished, as Colvin said, was amazing.

Aadi Patel took top honors in the 6-11 age group with 427 age-appropriate books read. Dani Daniel, once again, was the top reader in the young adult age group with an amazing 29,117 pages read.

“Dani blew it out of the water,” Colvin said. “She and Aadi both. And, Violet Amonson was the winner in our youngest age group. Violet had 109 books read to her by her parents and her sisters. She loves to hear stories read and I’m sure she will grow up to be a very dedicated reader.”

Colvin congratulated all the top readers in the different age groups.

“Reading is fun and those who participated in the Summer Reading Program, not only had fun, they learned a lot and that learning will benefit them in many ways during the school year and in life.”

The top readers in the 4 and 5 age group were Violet Amonson, Eli Southwick and Gideon Sutton.

Among the 6-year-old readers, Sofia Aelterman and Daisy Amonson were tops.

Penelope Earnest and Ben Hill topped the seven-year-old readers. And Aaid Patel and Queenie Chen were tops among the eight-year-old readers.

In the nine-year-old group, David Everett and Brodee Asher were tops.

Carl Knight and Ava Leverett were the top readers in the 10-year-old group.

Daniel Niu and Ginger Amonson were tops among the 11-year-old readers.

In the Young Adult division of the TPL Summer Reading Program, Dani Daniel, Princess Wright and Donna Chen were the top three readers.

Colvin said the number of pages read was so close that she couldn’t let the accomplishments of Alex Asher and Edward Aelterman go unrecognized.

“They are excellent readers, too, and also very dedicated, so I wanted to recognize them with honorable mention awards,” Colvin said.

“We gave top reader awards today but I want to congratulate every child, ages 4-18, who participated in the TPL Summer Reading Program. They are all readers and there’s no way to ‘top’ that.”
