Pike County Schools opened for the 2016-2017 school year on Tuesday and, by all reports, are off to a good start.
Dr. Mark Bazzell, Pike County Superintendent of Education, said all was quiet across the system on opening day.
“In the Pike County School System, we wanted to focus on instruction on the first day, and we were able to accomplish that,” Bazzell said. “We are off to a good start and looking for an outstanding school year.”
Bazzell said final enrollment numbers will not be available for several days but the numbers appeared to be steady for the previous school year.
“It doesn’t appear that we’ve lost any students,” he said. “I am anticipating that when all of the enrollment numbers are finalize, we will have between 2,200 and 2,300 students. We do have big increase in the numbers for the academies. We have 91 students participating in dual enrollment – 41 at Troy University and the remainder at Enterprise State Community College and Wallace State Community College at Hanceville.”
Bazzell said the Pike County School System has eight different academies, including the First in Flight and Leadership Academy.
The Pike County School System has high schools in Brundidge and Goshen and elementary and middle schools in Brundidge, Banks and Goshen.
