The Annie Lois McNabb family of Troy will host a Back to School event from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Murphree Park. The family wants to send all kids in grades K-8 packing.
David McNabb, spokesman for the McNabb family, said each child who attends the Back to School event will receive a backpack and age-appropriate school supplies to fill the pack.
“This is our fourth year for the Annie Lois McNabb Back to School event and our family looks forward to doing this for the kids in our community,” McNabb said. “Family members will come from as far away as California and New York to be a part of giving back to our community and to honor our mother.”
David McNabb and his brothers, Maxie and Tracy and their sister, Vachon McNabb Watts, grew up on East Walnut Street in Troy. Their mom, the late Annie Lois McNabb taught high school in Goshen and worked with scores of young people in Troy through the activities and events of First Missionary Baptist Church.
“Our mom died in March 2012 and we started the Back to School give-away in her memory and honor in 2013,” McNabb said.
“Our family realized that it is difficult for many families to purchase needed school supplies and we wanted to help lessen that burden on families. Each kid will get a backpack and supplies that will help them get off to a good start in the 2016-2017 school year. Anything to help the kids.”
All kids in grades, kindergarten through eighth grade, are invited to the event. Hotdogs, popcorn and sodas will be available for the kids who participate.
There will be no planned program, however, a local minister, Rev. George Gilchrist, will have prayer for the safety of the students and teachers throughout the school year.
McNabb expressed appreciation to several local businesses for their support of the Back to School event including Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, Food World and CVS.
