Fresh off their second win of the season, the Zion Chapel Rebels turn their sights to region rival Goshen this Friday.

“It’s amazing when you win a ballgame the amount of juice it gives you in practice,” said Rebels head coach Bubba Nall. “The kids are positive, they have been that way all year.”

The Rebels (2-3, 1-2) have talked about winning the small battles before big ones. Last week they took things one quarter at a time and beat Kinston 7-0.

“In order to win the big things you have to win the little things,” Nall said. “I think that says a lot about our kids. Our kids are playing hard. Our kids are doing what we are telling them to do.”

Even with success, they still face challenges, especially stopping the run.

“Is it still hard for us to tackle a 4-5 guy in space? Absolutely,” Nall said. “Anybody that plays us knows that. It’s not a secret. We have a problem tackling people in space.”

That could cause problems against Goshen, who rushed for 157 last week.

“Coach Snyder has a good football team,” Nall said. “They are very, very physical. I can make an argument that they are the most physical football team that we have seen up to this point,” Nall said. “We have to control that good running back, Zach Alford, along with Damion Passmore. We have to be able to stop those kids”

The Eagles enter the game with a 4-1 record and are coming off a 20-7 win over Houston Academy.

Along with stopping the run, the Rebels will also face a defense that has allowed 14 points per game. On offense the Rebels have averaged 13 points.

“The big key is our offense against their defense,” Nall said. “They have a very good defense. I think our offense and defense will play hard, but if we can move the ball, it’s amazing the confidence we will get. Even if we don’t score and we just get first downs and flip the field position with the good kicker that we have, that is going to pin them back.”

Zion Chapel and Goshen have met 26 times over the years with the Eagles holding a 20-6 advantage.

“We have to move the ball on offense. If we can get some first downs and establish ourselves on offense and keep the ball away from them, maybe we will have a chance against a very good football team,” Nall said.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Eagle Stadium in Goshen.
