Fall camp in full swing

With two weeks remaining in the fall baseball camp, Troy Trojan head coach Mark Smartt believes his team continues to improve.
Among the numerous intrasqaud games the Trojans have participated in, the highlight of the fall was their 24-run explosion against the Ontario Blue Jays.
“I have been pleased for the most part,” Smartt said. “I was especially pleased with our performance against Ontario, not from a win, loss perspective but it was more about how we went about that day. I thought our team really did very well.”
Troy native Joey Denison and Corey Childress turned in key performances against the Blue Jays and up to this point have turned in really good performances in the fall.
Denison finished the scrimmage with five hits, including two doubles and a triple. Entering his senior season, Denison is being looked upon as a leader.
“Joey is even better than he was last year,” Smartt said. “He has had a great fall. He is the hardest working player on our team, everyday. That really helps our team. He brings that attitude to the field every single day. I think he will help lead our team.”
Childress, a junior, is off to a good start as well. After pitching a heavy work load during the summer and five innings against the Blue Jays Childress will take the rest of the camp, but not before impressing his head coach.
“He has had another good camp this fall,” Smartt said. “He is throwing the ball exceptionally well. His last outing was against Ontario; we shut him down because he did have such a long summer on the mound. I love what he has been about this fall. He is all business.”
Other guys who have turned heads so far have been Marc Skinner and Trevor Davis
“(Skinner) is a senior pitcher that has taken on a real solid leadership role inside the pitching group,” Smartt said. “He is a role model in terms of how to go about your work and preparation. Trevor has played really well this fall. He had a good junior year, but not spectacular. So far this fall he looks like a better all around player.”
The Trojans set out at the beginning of camp to see what they have in their transfers and freshmen.
“That is what the fall is for,” Smartt said. “With all the new, first year players, you get a chance to see them compete. We are learning more about them. The freshmen are the harder ones to judge, simply because everything is new to them. I think they are all gaining and working better to this point.”
Trojans will have a young pitching staff heading into 2017. Of the seven freshmen, six of them are pitchers.
“I have been really pleased with each one of them,” Smartt said. “I think they have all matured a little bit and thrown well at times. I am really excited about their futures.”
The Trojans will close camp with a three-game intrasquad World Series beginning with a single game on November 3 and a double-header on November 4.
