Troy University has once again been saluted by two national organizations for its service the U.S. military.
“Military Advanced Education and Transition” has named Troy as a “Top School” in its 2017 Guide to Colleges and Universities, an honor awarded to institutions with the very best practices in military- and veteran-supportive education.
Military Times has listed Troy 38th nationally in its “Best for Vets: Colleges 2017” rankings. Military Times bases rankings on a survey of services provided to military-related students by colleges and universities, while also compiling data from the Veterans Affairs and Defense departments, as well as IPEDS Data Center, College Scorecard data and the Cohort Default Rate Database.
Troy’s history of service to the military dates back to the 1950s, when it began offering voluntary education to soldiers at the Army’s Fort Rucker, and the University has continued to deliver undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate degrees through a variety of on-base, near-base and online programs.
“Troy University takes its commitment to educating members of America’s military – and their families – very seriously,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor. “Since the 1950s, the University has set the standard of service, and these external rankings and recognition validate our efforts. We are proud of the thousands of our students and graduates who are serving in harm’s way and it’s with pride that we serve them and support them.”
Through the years, the commitment to serving military-related students has only continued to grow. The Troy for Troops Center, which has locations at the Troy, Dothan and Montgomery campuses, as well as a presence online, was developed as a one-stop shop for student services and other needs unique to military-related students.
In addition, the University has scholarships specifically for active duty, reserves, veterans and their dependents, including the most recent scholarship program, capping tuition costs at $250 per credit hour. The Military and Family Scholarship essentially eliminates out-of-pocket tuition costs for service members, and discounts tuition up to 50 percent for their families.
Through the Troy for Troops Center, the University also offers options for military students that recognize academic achievement, while also providing peer-to-peer support in academic efforts. The SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society recognizes veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard members and Reservists who have been honorably discharged or who are currently serving who maintain a 3.0 grade-point average or higher. In addition, the Student Veterans Alumni Chapter provides peer-to-peer support for veteran students’ academic success, as well as camaraderie during their transition to campus life.
