The Ariton Purple Cats wrapped up regional play on the road against the Samson Tigers. Ariton, who clinched the region last week, took down the Tigers 50-6 to finish undefeated in regional play.
The Purple Cats got off to a slow start but were quickly able to move the football. Quarterback Maddux Herring threw a pair of touchdowns, both to wide receiver Bryson Peavey. One of the two went 66 yards in the longest play of the night.
“We were a little flat early on,” Ariton head coach Steven Kilcrease said after the game. “Then we started moving the ball on offense and our defense was playing well.”
Herring finished the game with 137 passing yards on seven completions while Peavey added a punt return touchdown to give himself three scores on the night.
Running back Kape Mcrae was leaned on early, picking up 54 yards on eight carries. He was able to find the end zone twice on the ground.
Ariton was able to give Mcrae a rest for much of the second half as running backs Mike Mowry and Landon Thrash combined for 71 rushing yards and a touchdown.
“The big thing was that everybody got to play and get some experience,” said Kilcrease. “We finished region play undefeated which was our goal, to finish what we started.”
Ariton will finish off its regular season with a trip to Red Level to take on the Tigers next Friday. Red Level is currently 0-9 and coming off a 38-14 loss to Pleasant Home. The game will kick off at 7:00 pm.
