SWINGING FOR STATE: Troy softball teams begin tournament play at Sportsplex

The Dixie League Sweetee’s softball state tournament got underway in Troy and the host team defeated Montgomery American 25-10

Scoring wasn’t scarce early as Montgomery American plated four runs to open the game. Troy bested them in the bottom of the frame with five runs on six hits.

Montgomery was able to tie the game in the second, but the bats exploded for Troy in the bottom of the inning.

Troy rattled off eight hits before the first out was recorded and scored six runs in the inning. Wright had the only extra base hit of the frame, an RBI double bringing in Ava Stone.

Up 11-5, Troy held Montgomery scoreless in the third. Montgomery sent just three batters to the plate.

The host team then got back to work, sending 10 batters to the plate for the second consecutive inning and scoring nine runs to increase its lead out to 20-5.

Morgan Gardner topped off the inning with a three-run inside-the-park home run.

Montgomery American was sent down in order once more and the game was called with Troy on top. The Troy team advances to the second round of the tournament, which will be played today.

On the other side of the park, the Troy Darlings and Belles teams were in action as well.

The Troy Darlings edged Crenshaw County 12-10 in the first round of the Darlings tournament and will play the winner of Central and Montgomery American on Saturday.

Between the two teams, 10 runs were scored in the first inning, of which 6 belonged to Troy. Crenshaw took an 8-6 lead in the second inning with a four-run frame.

The host scored four in the third and two in the fourth to retake and maintain the lead. Reece Garrett scored three runs for Troy.

The Belles were up 24-2 in the fourth inning of their game.
