Tree giveaway moved to Colley Complex Thursday

The annual tree giveaway set for Thursday in downtown Troy has been moved from the square to the lower level of the Colley Senior Complex on Elm Street.
Carol Dorrill, immediate past president of the hosting Pike County Chapter of the Alabama TREASURE Forest Association, said the possibility of inclement weather was the reason for the change of venue.
The time remains the same from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. Thursday,
Dorrill said the Pike County’s 21st Annual Tree Giveaway will have a large variety of bare-root saplings at no charge
“You can pick and choose the trees you want as long as they last. Some trees will be specifically for landscaping while others will provide food for wildlife,” Dorrill said. “Some of the varieties will be willow oaks, northern red oaks, persimmons, paw-paws, sawtooth oaks and strawberry bushes or hearts are bursting.
“Of course, there will be other varieties but these are just a few that we know for sure will be available,” Dorrill said.
The saplings will be ready for potting.
“The recommendation is that the saplings be placed in small pots and kept watered over the summer so they can establish a good root system,” Dorrill said. “When the trees go into the dormant stage, they will be ready to plant and will have a good chance of surviving.”
Members of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce Farm City Committee and the Pike County Master Gardeners will assist with the tree giveaway.
