Finishing strong: Troy 8U team sweeps Montgomery, wins State championship

The Troy 8U Tournament Team became the second local team to win a state championship when they swept the Montgomery Americans in a best two-out-of-three championship series on Tuesday afternoon.

Troy knocked of Montgomery 13-6 in game one and then clinched the championship with a 12-5 win in game two.

“It’s been an amazing experience from the very beginning,” said head coach Will Sanders. “The boys, the way they responded in practice and all the hard work they put it, it’s a great moment.”

Troy finished the state tournament undefeated.

“They never dropped their heads,” Sanders said. “They stayed strong whenever a teammate was down. They supported each other and they were there for each other more than any other team I have been a part of. It’s a really special group.”

Troy scored in five of the six innings in game one, including a four-run sixth inning.

Troy broke the ice with three runs in the opening inning. Cole Davis had an RBI double, while Connor Sanders drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Bradunn Golden drove in a run on a groundout.

After a scoreless second inning, Troy added to their lead with two more runs in the third. Both runs scored on a double by Sanders and Troy carried a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

Troy had an RBI double by Tyrin Toney and an RBI single by Ethan Gardiner in the fourth to stretch Troy’s lead to 7-0.,

Already leading 7-2, Troy scored two more runs in the fifth on a triple by Dreyton Wingard and a sacrifice fly by Davis to go up 9-2.

Montgomery answered with four runs to briefly pull to within three at 9-6. Troy got all four runs back when they score four of their own in the top of the sixth inning. Troy had a pair of RBI doubles by JD Vaughn and Cope Russell.

Russell and Wingard led Troy with three hits, while Davis, Sanders, Dru Jinright, Toney, Ryan Copeland, Vaugh and Markel Toles all had two hits.

A seven-run third inning helped left Troy to a win in game two. They broke the ice with four runs in the opening inning after falling behind 2-0. Troy had seven hits in the inning including RBI singles by Wingard, Sanders and Toney.

Leading 4-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning, Troy ultimately put the game away with seven more runs.

Sanders smacked a three-run inside the park home run to get the run scoring started. Troy then had back-to-back RBI doubles by Toney and Gardiner.

With the game well in hand, Troy scored their final run of the game and the tournament in the fifth inning.

Troy finished with 18 hits led by Sanders who finished with three hits. Russell, Wingard, Davis, Golden, Porter Beasley and Toney all finished with one hit.

The Troy 8U team includes Porter Beasley, Ryan Copeland, Cole Davis, Ethan Gardiner, Bradunn Golden, Dru Jinright, Cope Russell, Connor Sanders, Markel Toles, Tyrin Toney, JD Vaughn and Dreyton Wingard. Troy is coached by Will Sanders, Troy Jinright, Todd Copeland and Brian Davis.
